I love to work in the bright, clear colors of Hawaii. We have so many wonderful ocean scenes with varied deep blues to pale turquoise with skies of pale blue with fluffy clouds. Our landscapes present 40 shades of green and more. I think of my work as "Island Memories" which I love to share.

You are invited to my 27 foot studio to see my light, bright workspace and the products of that work, although much of my work is done on location, en plein air. My home will be open as well to display many more works of art available.

Christina Currie
Painter, Designer, Dollmaker, Quilter
Oils, Watercolor, Fiber, Found Art

Trained in the school of the Old Masters, my expertise is Oil Painting on Large canvasses, in a Narrative/Figurative Style. When I am not painting I am designing and creating folk toys and art-quilts. My passion is capturing the joyful expressions of children and the stoic faces of the old locals. The enchanting costumes and festivals, along with the everyday events of Maui, challenges me to find the hidden Magic of this Valley Isle.

As you approach my studio, you will be greeted by my Tatoo surfboard benches. My work space will be packed with originals watercolors, oils, and prints. My entire inventory of one of a kind Fabric dolls and quilts will be available at very reasonable prices.

What makes me unique as an artist is collecting found objects and *upcycling* them. (Recycling an item by creating something new, which exceeds the beauty and functionality of the original object). My dolls, quilts, and surfboard benches are all Upcycled Art.

To all my collectors, I wish a Double Happiness.

Davo
Neo-Pop
Mixed Media Originals on canvas and other custom materials

Born in Los Angeles in 1950, Davo found that early in his career and studies he was strongly influenced in his works by renowned artists including Van Gogh, Gauguin, and Chagall. In 1969 he moved to Carmel, California, and lived with the granddaughter of the famous American photographer Edward Weston. For four years he put down his paint brush and picked up a view camera and tripod, and followed in the footsteps of Brett Weston and Ansel Adams around Carmel and Big Sur.

He first came to Maui in 1973 and toured the South Pacific Islands. Later, after spending time in New York's Soho district, Davo met Andy Warhol. It was while visiting "The Factory" - Warhol's studio - and meeting and talking with Warhol himself that Davo decided Pop-Art was a style more suited to his personality and life style.

He describes his work as neo-pop expressionism. His favorite subjects are modern icons, including Marilyn Monroe, Elvis, the Beatles, and Albert Einstein. His primary technique is serigraphy.

His many collectors include Carlos Santana and Eric Burden of the "Animals". Davo has attended the Academy Awards, and is an annual invited guest artist for the Grammy Awards, and regularly paints the honoree for the Musicares Awards, including Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, Sting, Neil Young, Phil Collins, Tony Bennett, and many others.

Ken Loyd
Oil Painter

Ocean view studio upstairs in the artist home.

I work mostly with oils on canvas.

I create happy, fun visions of Maui. Some of my art is of a specific location on the island while others are painted from a feeling you have when you are on Maui. Like "The Road to Where You Want to Be, selected by Starbucks for their first Wailea location, is all about feeling.

Ken invites you into his private studio in Kihei.

While we have always had clients to the studio by appointment I think this will be different and fun as an all day event with a bit of jazz, refreshments and visiting with art minded people.

Brad Huck
Painter/Mixed Media
Mixed media collage with wax on wooden panels

My process involves heavily layering surfaces. I create a sort of history that I can work back into. By sanding and scraping I reveal pieces of the past which can take on new meaning within the painting's revised surface context. In the end what is let go of defines the piece as much as what remains.

Gain insight into the artists process at this dynamic well stocked studio event. A wide range of Brad Hucks explorative work will be featured and complimented by the art of Linda Whittamore and Stephanie Sachs both of whom will both be hosting thier work at this one location as well.

Tonia Marks Baney

CANCELLED - NO LONGER IN THE EVENT

Oils, pastels, graphic/pencil, colored pencils, watercolor

Having been an artist for most of my life, I have painted or drawn almost every subject in a realist manner with some surrealist aspects. But most interesting to me is the portrait. The intricate beauty and unique personality of each person is always a challenge and a delight. Oil on linen is my favorite but pastels are great fun and I always love graphite and colored pencils.

Since we live in an historical Arts and Crafts home our theme will be High English Tea. Small sandwiches, while they last, will be served with cookies and hot tea. Tonia will be on hand to serve, talk and demonstrate. Her paintings will be seen throughout the home perched on the wainscotting or easels. There is plenty of parking on the property or the street. The home is 300 feet from the beach in the middle of Kihei.

James Powlan
Printmaker
Aquatint Etching on Kimono Silk

I have been a printmaker since 1977 and etch my images from my drawings onto copper plates using a process called Aquatint. I hand ink and print my images using my Takach press on Kimono silk. The Kimono's are often antique and I purchase them in Kyoto. After I print on the silk I back it with a handmade Japanese paper just the way scroll makers have done in Japan for 1000 years My editions are made up of only 15 prints and each is really one of a kind as they are printed on different types of silk.

"I have always felt that certain places and images have a special aura and I try to capture that in my work".

My images are my take on early Japanese Buddhist Art as well as semi abstract figures that show light and movement. I like to call it "Art Deco meets Buddha. My work has been selected to be in Art Maui multiple times and has been purchased by collectors in Australia, Japan and the West Coast

I will be demonstating hand inking of some of my new work as well as printing on silk and traditional Japanese scroll mounting. There will be many items for sale and you can choose from items already finished or select a particular silk and I will make your one of a kind print for you.

I love good food and wine and will have plenty of both.

Please stop by for a better understanding of traditional print making and share a glass of wine in my studio with a view.

My beloved Maui Meadows home will be installed with 50 art works arranged thematically. There will be pupus & beverages. I will present a performance art piece at 2:00. Wanda Russell
Painter/Photographer
Oil, Watercolor and Mixed Media

I push the limits of design and color interaction. Growth patterns of plant shapes full of energy, their impetus being the trade winds. I want to invite the viewer to feel a connection to the environment. Contemporary. Semi-abstract designs. Glowing color. Hawaii State Foundation/Private Collectors, I Thank You.

Are you a semi-abstract appreciator? Then come take in studio, ocean and Maui views while talking about how art inspires us all. How do my paintings feel to you and your interpretation of Hawaii and the Pacific? A chance to see a large body of work.

Leslie Granat
Painter
Collecting Hubris, Transparent Watercolor & Collage

I love the flowers and the fish of these hawaiian islands. Many find my work "romantic". With my dogs asleep at my feet, I get into a blissful state, completely "zoned out"... watching " happy accidents" occur with water! Time stands still. I'm in the moment!

This will be a mini celebration of emerging artists exhibiting throughout lush, peaceful gardens...artisans, jewelers, crafts people, refreshments and music will hopefully provide a memorable visit to this studio and event.

I wish to express my gratitude to Carolyn Quan for initiating and facilitating this guidebook and gala art affair event with open studios. It is not only needed but welcomed as a vehicle for artists not affiliated with galleries to still reach the public.

Secondly, after five years of studying and painting, I had the privilege and awesomely exhilirating experience of my first solo show!

Discussing my works with interested artgoers was gratifying. As buyers shared with me their joys of owning one of my paintings the realization that my work could bring happiness to others was overwhelming. Gratitude to Jonathan Lehmann for inviting me to exhibit at the opening of his ProArts Playhouse in Kihei. The experience became a BIG highlight of my life!
